Projection Mapping at Uppsala Light Festival
INGMAR BERGMAN - ILLUMINATED CONVERSATIONS
The video mapping piece begins with a dark and eerie atmosphere with distorted sounds. As the projection unfolds, iconic scenes and characters from Ingmar Bergman’s films are projected onto the facade of Upplandsmuseet, creating a mesmerising and immersive experience for the viewers.
The installation explores themes of existentialism, loneliness, and human connection, which are central to Bergman’s works. The visuals and soundscape evoke a sense of introspection and provoke contemplation about the depths of the human psyche.
As time passes, the installation delves deeper into Bergman’s darker side. Images of haunting landscapes and isolated figures are projected, accompanied by eerie melodies and dialogues that showcase the filmmaker’s fascination with god, death and the afterlife.
The video mapping piece also pays homage to Bergman’s signature cinematography techniques. The projection incorporates close-ups of characters’ faces, capturing their emotions and inner turmoil. The use of chiaroscuro lighting creates dramatic and contrasting visuals, further emphasising the complexity of Bergman’s narratives.
As part of the video mapping project, scenes from Fanny and Alexander were brought to life on the façade of Uppsala Museum—the very location where they were originally filmed. This unique connection allowed the audience to relive iconic moments from the movie in the exact setting where they unfolded, blending cinematic history with projection art.
Overall, the video mapping installation created by Bopa for the Uppsala Light Festival 2018 successfully relays the depth and raw morbidity of Ingmar Bergman’s works. By immersing the audience into Bergman’s world, the installation fosters an appreciation for the filmmaker’s profound and timeless contributions to cinema for his 100th anniversary.
